flora The flowers and surroundings around my aunt and uncle's house in Bhubaneswar. My aunt has an impressive orchid collection.

temples The majority of still-intact northern temple architecture untouched by the Mughal invasion is found in Orissa. Amongst these pictures are the Rajarani temple, and the temples devoted to Lord Shiva: Mukteshwar and Parameshwar.

train station My cousin Runa and I are off on a 25-hour train ride on the very comfortable Rajdhani Express to delhi! they serve really good tea.

a day in puri Runa and I took the bus to Puri, the holy seaside city of Lord Jagganath (a.k.a. Krishna). We visited the temple, the beach (replete with tourists from Calcutta), shopped in the street markets and had lunch at Runa's grandfather's house.

uttar pradesh purana qila Said to be constructed on the site of the ancient legendary city Indraprastha, the Purana Qila (Old Fort) was built in 1538-1545 by Emperors Sher Shah and Humayun. Now it's a peaceful, flower-filled picnic place for couples.

uttar pradesh lal qila Also known as the Red Fort, because of the colour of its stone walls, the Lal Qila was built in around 1640 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. The buildings within the complex are all done in marble inlaid with precious stones, and running water once flowed through the buildings, cooling them in the Indian heat.

uttar pradesh humayun's tomb The resting place of Mughal Emperor Humayun was built by his grieving widow Haji Begum in 1565. The architecture is very persian in style, like the Taj Mahal, ornamented with marble lattices and gardens. Around the main tomb, other important members of the family are buried there, including the emperor's barber.

uttar pradesh q'tub minar Built in 1199, the tallest tower in all of India is made up of stone inscribed with lines from the Q'ran as well as bits of older Hindu temples. There is also a curious Iron Pillar in the middle of the complex that dates back to the 4th century and has never ever rusted.
